Knowledge and attitudes towards gender violence in mental health professionals

Introduction: in the world, gender violence is a serious public health problem, it also constitutes an attack on the human rights of women. Physical and sexual abuse has been linked to the development of mental health problems.The knowledge and attitudes that health professionals have about the problem impact on the care of women who suffer violence.
Objective: to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes towards gender violence in mental health professionals of a psychiatric clinic in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
Material and methods: descriptive, quantitative, prospective, cross-sectional study, carried out on 72 health professionals who work in a psychiatric clinic. An ad hoc questionnaire was applied to assess knowledge and attitudes.
Results: the studied population presented poor knowledge; however, a favorable attitude was found to the problem of violence.
Conclusion: gender violence requires sensitive and empathetic professionals for its approach, therefore, health institutions must develop strategies aimed at improving their knowledge, skills and abilities; so that they offer comprehensive and dignified care to women who suffer violence.
